Recently, the 2026 MWC Shanghai opened as scheduled. Unlike the warm atmosphere of last year when 5G-A commercial orders were intensively landed, this year's exhibition halls exuded a cautious sense of pragmatism. The '6G Industry Ecosystem Zone' and the 'Future Constellation' satellite zone, which were set up independently for the first time, were bustling with visitors, but the industry was more keen on deducting 'when technology can turn into real money'.
A Blue Whale Technology reporter found that in the 6G direction, the three major paths of integrated sensing and communication, AI-native, and air-space-ground integration are no longer controversial. Chip manufacturers have even started pre-research and stocking in advance. In the field of satellite Internet, the 'land grab' for orbital frequencies has basically ended, and scale networking and cost reduction have become new themes. However, consensus stops at the technical level: terminal manufacturers and investment institutions are generally staying on the sidelines. The former are waiting for a killer application, and the latter cannot calculate the return cycle. Even international satellite players that have achieved profitability are struggling with the early cultivation of the civilian market.
When the financial account for 5G investment has not yet been fully settled, 6G and satellite Internet are collectively entering a transition period of 'clear vision but difficult delivery'. The technical path is narrowing, but the commercial way out is widening. Under the constraint of real investment returns, the industry needs a more pragmatic answer than 'grand narratives'.
6G Technology Paths Converge, Commercial Loop Still Being Explored
Walking into the 6G Industry Ecosystem exhibition area in Hall N3 of MWC Shanghai, five sections - Beijing 6G Lab General Zone, Communication Enhancement, Integrated Sensing and Communication, Integrated Communication-Computing-Intelligence, and Air-Space-Ground Integration - break down 6G's core technological vision clearly. On-site staff told Blue Whale Technology reporter that this is the first time MWC Shanghai has set up a dedicated hall for 6G, releasing a clear signal that 6G has moved from concept discussion to the key stage of system verification.

'If last year people were still debating what 6G should do, this year the debate is already about how to do it and what trade-offs to make,' said a technician from the Beijing 6G Lab General Zone. Currently, the three enhancement paths of integrated sensing and communication, AI-native, and air-space-ground integration have basically formed industry consensus. Key technologies such as terahertz communication and intelligent metasurfaces have also entered the prototype verification stage.
The pace of layout in the upstream of the industry chain is clearly accelerating. At this exhibition, Qualcomm demonstrated an end-to-end 6G prototype system. GalaxySpace publicly displayed its self-developed second-generation phased array antenna for direct-to-cell for the first time in the 6G industry ecosystem area. vivo exhibited its 6G pre-research prototype and technology roadmap. Unlike Xiaomi's focus on underlying transmission algorithms and OPPO's focus on communication paradigm innovation, vivo's display direction is more towards end-to-end systems and application implementation - its complete 6G test system includes full-link components such as MR terminals, 6G terminal prototypes (UE), 6G base stations (RAN), and core networks.

An on-site representative of a domestic chip manufacturer said that the company's internal 6G pre-research team size has doubled compared to last year. The logic is very clear: 'It would be too late to start after the standard is frozen. We must make technology reserves first.'
However, compared to the enthusiasm of the upstream, the attitude of terminal manufacturers is relatively cautious. A Blue Whale Technology reporter asked multiple mobile phone brands at the 6G zone about their 6G terminal plans, and most responded with 'closely monitoring'. There were few consumer-grade product demonstrations specifically for 6G on the booth. A director of 6G pre-research at a globally top-five mobile phone maker said in an informal exchange that it is still difficult to present a clear 6G mobile phone commercial roadmap. The core reason is not insufficient technical capability, but that the transformation path from user demand and application scenarios on the terminal side is still under study. In his view, the experience dividend of 5G has not yet been fully released, and the scenes 6G envisions, such as immersive holography and multi-dimensional senses, are still some distance from the mass consumer market.
The investment community is also cautious. A Blue Whale Technology reporter met an early-stage investor focused on the TMT sector at the exhibition. After observing multiple demonstrations in the 6G zone, he said that the technology direction is impressive from a technical perspective, but from an investment perspective, the capital return of 5G is still in the digestion cycle. The subsequent R&D and network deployment investment scale for 6G is enormous, and the exit cycle and return expectations currently lack sufficient data support. He admitted that at the current stage, it is more about tracking and observing, and the timing to act still requires clearer commercial signals.
'Future Constellation': Structure Initially Set, Profit Path Yet to Be Verified
Unlike the atmosphere of the 6G exhibition area focusing on key technology verification, the first-time 'Future Constellation' satellite industry zone presents a different industry pace: the orbital structure has taken initial shape, and participants are entering a phase of intensive resource and cost management.
Domestic low-orbit broadband and narrowband constellation operators such as Geospace Technologies, China StarNet, and Yuanxin Satellite, along with international players like Iridium, set up sizable booths. Geospace Technologies displayed real terminal equipment for low-orbit satellite Internet in scenarios such as ocean-going vessels and desert mining areas; China StarNet focused on promoting the Tianqi constellation's IoT application cases; engineers from Yuanxin Satellite conducted a live video call using the 'Qianfan Constellation' to showcase test footage.

'The competition for orbital and frequency resources of satellite Internet has come to an end, and the current key lies in scale deployment and cost control,' said an on-site staff member from China StarNet. He revealed that the batch production cost of the company's narrowband communication payloads is continuously decreasing, but also pointed out that the user scale of satellite Internet services has not yet reached the break-even point, and government and industry orders will remain the basic support for revenue for at least the next few years.
In the process of forming a profit model, terminal cost is a link worth noting. When a Blue Whale Technology reporter exchanged views on the material cost of satellite communication terminals at antenna and module manufacturer booths, respondents generally said costs are falling rapidly and have the capability to be integrated into mainstream models, but most manufacturers did not disclose specific numbers.
A business manager at the Iridium booth said that Iridium has achieved positive cash flow relying on narrowband voice and low-speed data services, but the traditional market space is becoming saturated. The next growth point needs to expand into IoT and emergency communication fields. Meanwhile, domestic low-orbit broadband constellations are still in a catch-up phase prioritizing scale, and achieving break-even will require time and user accumulation.
